Useful links

Here are a few places I have discovered while surfing the web.  Things change often so if you find a dead link don't be surprised.  If you run across something you feel might be useful to other students let me know.

USGS - U.S. Geological Survey homepage.  Find the location of recent earthquakes at home and around the world.
Space

Computer Utilities
Firefox Browser - Avoid trouble by using Firefox rather than Internet Explorer.  Explorer is like a welcome mat to hackers
Thunderbird - This is a mail utility by Mozilla to replace Microsoft Outlook.  It also helps in avoiding trouble by not using Outlook, a program that is constantly under attack by hackers.
Anti-Virus   AVG from Gresoft.com  This is a free program and has some limitations.  You can also download a free 30 day trial or buy it on-line.
Spybot.com  Helps clean junk picked up while surfing the internet.  After you download it, be sure to get the newest updates before scanning your computer.
Ad-Aware personal  Look for it on the menu to the left.  Cleans pop-up ads and other unwanted junk that slows down a computer.
Defender  This comes from Microsoft and offers real time protection.  It is also free if you have a legitimate copy of Windows on your computer.  At the top of the page, search using the word "Defender" and it should come right up.  This provides realtime protection to avoid trouble.
Helpful programs

Copernic.com  In my opinion, this is the best program for searching the Internet.  It allows you to save your searches for use later.  Best of all, it's free.
Adobe Acrobat Reader - This is a necessary program for reading .pdf files and is also free.
Open Office  - This is a group of six free programs including writer which is the same as Microsoft Word.  The big difference is Word cost $90 and Writer is free.  It also includes a spreadsheet program, PowerPoint, a data base program, a program to write pdf files and a drawing program.
google earth - Great way to see what places on earth look like (including your house).  Now includes google sky.
