Code of Conduct

Student expectations...
By this stage of your high school career you should have a clear understanding of the behavior that is expected of you.  You should always do your best and allow the students around you to do the same.  Be aware, your actions while on this campus carry consequences which range from classroom detention for minor violations all the way to expulsion.  I expect you to behave like the professional student you are, follow all classroom and school rules, and be a responsible citizen of Downey High School.

Viking Pride is…

  • Attending school everyday and being on time (tardy sweep).
  • Being a good citizen and showing respect for others.
  • Bringing necessary materials to class.
  • Completing homework assignments.
  • Doing your own work.
  • Meeting deadlines.
  • Participate in your education by asking questions.
  • Being tolerant, this school has almost 4,000 other students.
  • Dressing appropriately (see school dress code).
  • Using acceptable language and avoiding gossip and inflammatory statements.
  • Exercising good classroom conduct.
  • Taking care of school property and keeping your campus clean.

Classroom rules:

  • No food, gum, drinks, drugs, cigarettes or weapons in the classroom.
  • Any electronic device visible (or heard) will be confiscated and sent to the office.
  • Backpacks and purses will be on the hooks within 3 minutes following the bell.
  • Only pencils, pens and the days work will be on your desk.
  • All graded papers will be in ink (unless otherwise specified).
    • Use correct heading on all papers (see example).
    • Incomplete work is not graded.
    • Late papers must have “Justification” slip attached when put in basket.
  • Check grades online and report errors within 48 hours of being posted.
  • No talking in tutorial.  Have a book you can read for pleasure.
    • If you talk you will loose tutorial privileges.
  • You have three hall passes per semester for emergency use, don’t waste them.
    • No pass first 30 minutes or last 20 minutes of class.
    • Unused passes are worth 5 points each extra credit.
    • Students sent outside during class will forfeit 5 extra credit points and if none remain, detention will be assigned.
  • Detention is held before school from 6:45 to 7:30 A.M.
    • If served the same day it is assigned, detention time will be reduced.
  • Save all trash at your desk and throw it away at the end of class.

*pass policy:  You are given four pass to be used at your discretion during the semester.  These are for emergencies such as going to the bathroom, trips to the school nurse or recovering lost items.  Passes should never be wasted.  At the end of the semester I will give you five extra credit points for each unused pass (maximum of 20 points).  After they are gone, you will be required to make up that time after school at the rate of 1/2 hour per pass.

If you are asked to leave class and stand outside because of unacceptable behavior, one pass will be taken away.  You may choose to serve detention rather than loose that pass.  It will be 30 minutes that day after school, the decision is up to you.
